Whenever a significant prize-giving event draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.
Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. So would board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games in the world and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier game development, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
